Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese, divided
  • 1 cup diced onions
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 8 oz pasta or egg noodles
  • 2 tablespoons pickle relish or 1/4 cup diced pickles (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons mustard or ketchup (optional)
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Cook the Ground Beef: Brown the ground beef in a large skillet over medium heat until fully cooked and no longer pink. Drain excess fat to prevent greasiness in the casserole.
  2. Sauté Onions: Add diced onions to the cooked beef and sauté for 3-4 minutes until softened and fragrant, enriching the flavor base.
  3. Mix in Tomato Sauce and Seasonings: Pour in the tomato sauce and stir in salt, pepper, and optional mustard or ketchup. Mix well to combine all flavors evenly.
  4. Prepare Pasta: Cook the pasta or egg noodles according to package instructions until al dente, then drain and set aside.
  5. Combine and Layer: In a baking dish, combine the cooked pasta with the beef and tomato sauce mixture. Sprinkle half of the shredded cheddar cheese evenly on top.
  6. Bake and Melt: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the casserole for 15 minutes, then remove and sprinkle the remaining cheddar cheese on top. Continue baking for an additional 5 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and golden.

Notes

  • Do not overcook the pasta; keep it slightly firm as it will cook more in the oven.
  • Drain excess fat thoroughly from the ground beef to avoid soggy casserole.
  • Use sharp cheddar cheese for a richer, bolder flavor.
  • Let the casserole rest for 5-10 minutes after baking to allow layers to set.
  • For extra gooeyness, try mixing cheddar with mozzarella cheese.
