Ingredients

Scale

Potatoes

  • 4 large Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced (about 1/8 inch thick)

Cheese Blend

  • 1 1/2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1 1/2 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded

Fresh Herbs

  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 tsp fresh thyme leaves, chopped
  • 1 tsp fresh rosemary, chopped

Other Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups heavy cream
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp butter (for greasing the dish and layering)
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Potatoes: Start by washing, peeling, and thinly slicing your potatoes to about 1/8 inch thick. Ensuring uniform slices will help the potatoes cook evenly and absorb the cheese and herb flavors perfectly.
  2. Make the Herb Cheese Mixture: In a bowl, combine shredded cheddar and mozzarella cheeses with minced garlic, chopped fresh parsley, thyme, and rosemary, heavy cream, salt, and pepper. This creamy blend will serve as the flavorful glue holding your bake together.
  3. Layer the Bake: Grease your baking dish thoroughly with butter. Arrange a layer of potato slices on the bottom, sprinkle a portion of the cheese-herb mixture evenly over the potatoes, and continue layering until all ingredients are used. Finish with a generous cheese topping.
  4. Bake to Golden Perfection: Cover the dish with foil and bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for about 45 minutes. Remove the foil during the last 15 minutes of baking to allow the top to become bubbly and golden brown.
  5. Cool and Serve: Allow the bake to rest for 10 minutes after removing it from the oven so the layers can set beautifully, which makes serving warm, cheesy slices easier and cleaner.

Notes

  • Even Slices Matter: Use a mandoline slicer for perfectly consistent potato thickness and even cooking.
  • Fresh Herbs Are Key: Use fresh, not dried, herbs for vibrant aroma and flavor.
  • Don’t Skip Resting: Letting the bake cool slightly makes slicing cleaner and enhances flavors.
  • Cover While Baking: Keep the dish covered initially so the potatoes steam and become tender before browning.
  • Add Extra Cheese on Top: Sprinkle some Parmesan or extra cheddar during the last 10 minutes for an ultra-crispy, cheesy crust.
