Funnel Cake Sticks are a fun, crispy, and sweet treat inspired by classic carnival funnel cakes, shaped into convenient sticks perfect for dipping and sharing. Made with simple pantry staples, these golden, crunchy delights are quick to prepare and bring a delightful light crunch without greasiness, making them an ideal snack or dessert for festive occasions or cozy weekends.

Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For Frying and Topping

  • Vegetable oil (for frying), about 2-3 inches deep
  • Powdered sugar (for dusting)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Batter: Start by whisking together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl. In a separate bowl, combine the milk, egg, and vanilla extract. Slowly add the wet ingredients to the dry mixture while stirring until you achieve a smooth, thick batter.
  2. Heat the Oil: Pour vegetable oil into a deep frying pan or pot to a depth of about 2-3 inches. Heat the oil over medium heat to 350°F (175°C), using a kitchen thermometer to ensure the temperature is accurate for perfect frying.
  3. Shape the Funnel Cake Sticks: Transfer the batter into a piping bag or a resealable plastic bag with a small corner cut off. Pipe the batter into stick shapes about 4-5 inches long directly into the hot oil.
  4. Fry Until Golden: Cook the sticks for 2-3 minutes on each side until they turn golden brown and crispy. Carefully flip them using tongs or a slotted spoon.
  5. Drain and Dust: Remove the fried funnel cake sticks from the oil and place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. While still warm, dust generously with powdered sugar for the classic sweet finish.

Notes

  • Maintain oil temperature at 350°F to keep the sticks crispy and non-greasy.
  • Keep batter thick but pourable; avoid runny batter to maintain shape.
  • Use a small round piping tip or snip a tiny corner of your plastic bag for uniform sticks.
  • Fry in batches to prevent overcrowding and maintain oil temperature.
  • Drain on paper towels immediately to avoid soggy sticks.
  • Leftovers store well at room temperature for up to 2 days in an airtight container.
  • Freeze wrapped sticks for up to 1 month and reheat in oven for crispiness.
  • You can bake sticks at 400°F for 12-15 minutes as a less greasy alternative.
  • Gluten-free and vegan variations can be made by substituting flour and milk/egg accordingly.
