Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 to 2 teaspoons ceremonial grade matcha powder
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar (dark or light)
  • 1/2 cup water (for syrup)
  • 1 cup whole milk (or almond, oat, or coconut milk for dairy-free)
  • Ice cubes as needed
  • 2 ounces hot water (about 175°F / 80°C)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Brown Sugar Syrup: Dissolve equal parts brown sugar and water in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir frequently until fully melted and the syrup thickens slightly. Remove from heat and let it cool completely.
  2. Whisk the Matcha Powder: Place 1 to 2 teaspoons of matcha powder in a bowl. Add about 2 ounces of hot water (not boiling, around 175°F or 80°C) and whisk vigorously in a zigzag motion until fully dissolved and a frothy layer forms on top.
  3. Combine Syrup and Matcha: Pour the cooled brown sugar syrup over the whisked matcha mixture, stirring gently to combine the flavors while keeping the frothy texture.
  4. Add Milk and Ice: Fill a glass halfway with ice cubes, then pour cold milk over the ice. Slowly add the matcha and brown sugar blend on top to create layers. Stir just before drinking to mix all flavors evenly.

Notes

  • Use sifted matcha powder to avoid clumps for a smoother drink.
  • Use hot but not boiling water to avoid bitterness in matcha.
  • Make brown sugar syrup ahead and store in the fridge to save time.
  • Experiment with different milk types to find preferred creaminess and flavor.
  • Serve immediately for best texture and flavor balance.
  • Garnish with matcha powder, toasted brown sugar crystals, or mint leaves for extra flair.
  • Store leftover latte in a sealed bottle in the fridge up to 24 hours; stir well before serving.
  • Freezing is not recommended due to texture changes.
