Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, minced
  • 2 green onions, sliced
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (gochugaru)
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 4 cups cooked white rice

Instructions

  1. Prepare Ingredients: Mince the garlic and ginger, slice the green onions, and measure out the soy sauce, brown sugar, and red pepper flakes to have everything ready before cooking.
  2. Cook the Ground Beef: Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef, breaking it apart with a spatula. Cook for about 5 to 7 minutes until browned and no longer pink.
  3. Add Aromatics and Sauce: Stir in the minced garlic and ginger, cooking for about 1 minute until fragrant. Pour in the soy sauce, brown sugar, and red pepper flakes, stirring well to combine. Let the mixture simmer for a few minutes until the sauce thickens slightly.
  4. Garnish and Serve: Remove the skillet from heat and sprinkle the sliced green onions over the beef. Serve immediately over bowls of steaming hot cooked white rice.

Notes

  • Use fresh garlic, ginger, and green onions for the best flavor.
  • Do not overcrowd the pan to ensure proper browning; cook the beef in batches if needed.
  • Adjust the amount of brown sugar to your preferred sweetness level.
  • Let the beef rest for a minute after cooking to develop deeper flavors.
  • Using a cast iron skillet can improve caramelization and heat retention.
  • Substitute soy sauce with tamari or gluten-free soy sauce to make the dish gluten-free.
  • Try adding toppings like toasted sesame seeds, shredded carrots, kimchi, or a fried egg for extra flavor and texture.
  • Store leftovers in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Freeze beef and rice separately in freezer-safe containers.
  • Reheat beef in a skillet with a splash of water; reheat rice in the microwave with a damp paper towel to keep it moist.
