Perfectly portable and kid-friendly, these handheld treats can be customized to suit various tastes and dietary needs, offering a delightful savory bite any time of day.

Ingredients

Base

  • Pizza Dough – 1 ball (store-bought or homemade, about 12 oz)

Filling

  • Pepperoni Slices – 20 to 25 slices
  • Mozzarella Cheese, shredded – 1 ½ cups
  • Tomato Sauce (pizza or marinara) – ½ cup

Topping

  • Olive Oil – 1 to 2 tablespoons for brushing
  • Italian Herbs (dried oregano, basil, or mixed seasoning) – 1 teaspoon

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: Roll out your pizza dough on a lightly floured surface into a large rectangular shape to ensure an even layer for all your fillings and make rolling easier.
  2. Spread Tomato Sauce Evenly: Using a spoon or small spatula, spread a thin, even layer of tomato sauce over the entire dough, leaving a small border around the edges to prevent spillover.
  3. Add Pepperoni and Cheese: Lay down a generous layer of pepperoni slices evenly on top of the sauce, then sprinkle a thick, even layer of shredded mozzarella cheese over everything.
  4. Roll into a Scroll: Carefully start rolling the dough from one long edge toward the other into a tight, even log to keep all the fillings inside.
  5. Slice and Arrange: Use a sharp knife or clean dental floss to cut the rolled dough into evenly sized scrolls about 1 to 1.5 inches wide, and place them spaced out on a greased or parchment-lined baking tray.
  6. Brush and Season: Brush the tops of the scrolls with olive oil and sprinkle your favorite Italian herbs over them for added aroma and color.
  7. Bake Until Golden: Bake the scrolls in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 15 to 20 minutes or until they are puffed up and golden brown on top.

Notes

  • Use cold dough to make rolling easier and help maintain the shape of your scrolls.
  • Don’t overload the fillings; keep sauce, cheese, and pepperoni evenly distributed but not too thick to prevent bursting during baking.
  • Use a sharp knife or dental floss to slice the scrolls cleanly without squashing them.
  • For an extra shiny, crispy top, brush olive oil both before baking and immediately after baking.
  • Serve the scrolls warm to enjoy the melty cheese and soft, savory flavors at their best.
