Ingredients

Scale

Beef and Marinade

  • 300g lean beef sirloin, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp fish sauce
  • 2 tbsp fresh lime juice
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1 tsp brown sugar

Salad Vegetables and Herbs

  • 1 cup fresh cilantro leaves
  • 1 cup fresh mint leaves
  • 1 cup fresh Thai basil leaves
  • 1 medium cucumber, sliced into thin rounds or half-moons
  • 100g cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 2 shallots, thinly sliced
  • 1 red chili, thinly sliced (adjust to taste)
  • 2 cups salad greens or lettuce (romaine, butter lettuce, or mixed greens)

Dressing

  • 3 tbsp fresh lime juice
  • 2 tbsp fish sauce
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1 red chili, thinly sliced

Optional Garnishes and Additions

  • Chopped roasted peanuts or cashews
  • Extra whole mint leaves
  • Additional thinly sliced red chili

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Beef: Marinate thinly sliced sirloin in a mixture of 2 tbsp fish sauce, 2 tbsp fresh lime juice, 1 minced garlic clove, and 1 tsp brown sugar for at least 15 minutes. Heat a skillet or grill and sear the beef until just cooked through, keeping it juicy and tender. Allow the beef to rest before slicing thinly against the grain.
  2. Prep the Vegetables and Herbs: While the beef marinates, wash and dry the cilantro, mint, and Thai basil leaves. Slice the cucumber into thin rounds or half-moons, halve the cherry tomatoes, and thinly slice the shallots and red chili. Gently toss all these in a large bowl with the salad greens.
  3. Make the Dressing: Whisk together 3 tbsp fresh lime juice, 2 tbsp fish sauce, 1 tbsp brown sugar, 1 minced garlic clove, and sliced red chili until the sugar dissolves and flavors blend. Taste and adjust for balance between tangy, salty, sweet, and spicy.
  4. Combine and Toss: Add the sliced beef to the bowl of herbs and vegetables. Pour the dressing over and toss carefully to coat everything evenly. Serve immediately to preserve the fresh crunch and vibrant flavor of the salad.

Notes

  • Rest cooked beef before slicing to retain juiciness and tenderness.
  • Use fresh lime juice for authentic, vibrant acidity instead of bottled juice.
  • Adjust fish sauce, sugar, and lime juice for a balanced dressing with salty, sweet, sour, and spicy notes.
  • Use fresh herbs carefully so their flavors enhance without overpowering the salad.
  • Serve the salad immediately to enjoy its crisp textures and fresh zestiness.
